Here are the updated (August 27, 2025) for high schools.

  • To operate a drone on school grounds, you must have 14 CFR Part 107 Remote Pilot Certification.
  • To fly at night,
    • The remote pilot in command must complete an updated initial knowledge test or online recurrent training, and
    • The small unmanned aircraft must have lighted anti-collision lighting visible for at least three (3) statute miles that has a flash rate sufficient to avoid a collision.
  • DO NOT fly the drone over people unless you meet special requirements outlined in the Part 107 rule.
  • If you are operating in controlled airspace (such as near an airport), you must get authorization before the flight.
See  Where can I fly? for more details.
  • Visit this website B4UFLY to determine if you are in controlled airspace and are required to get authorization prior to flight.
  • Fly at or below the maximum altitude as determined by the airspace above you.  If not in controlled airspace fly below 400’.
  • Having the drone attached to a tether does not relieve any of these rules.  The operator still must comply with 14 CFR Part 107.
  • Information on all these subjects and more can be found at the FAA Drone Zone website.
