Message from MMEA President

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

On behalf of the Mississippi Music Educators Association, I would like to welcome you to a new and promising year of music education in our state. As president of MMEA, I am pleased to tell you that our organization on a state and national level is making great strides to insure that music education is afforded to every child as a part of a well-rounded education.

This past summer I had the privilege of representing Mississippi in the 68thNational Assembly in Washington, D.C. sponsored by the National Association for Music Education (NAfME).  This year’s assembly featured discussions by Divisions, reports and breakout sessions covering NAfME’s Strategic Plan: Advocacy, Leading the Profession, Research, and Capacity Building. These sessions were designed to help prepare music educators for a new year of growth in service to our diverse student population in an increasingly complex educational world.

On Friday, June 29, each of us had the opportunity to bring our advocacy message for music education directly to our Congressional leaders during NAfME’s Hill Day 2018.  We had the opportunity to meet with our Senators and Congressmen to advocate in support for full funding of the Every Student Succeeds Act, which supports a well-rounded education within the Higher Education Act, and other bills in support of music education across America. It was an experience I will never forget and I will continue to carry the torch home to our own state officials and constituents!

Our MMEA Board and Advisers are ready, willing, and able to work to make this our best year ever!  We have been blessed with leaders who have great musical minds with a genuine desire to advocate and uphold musical standards, and who have hearts created for service to music educators and music students all over our state!

We are also looking forward to bolstering our strong relationship with our sister organization, MSACDA (Mississippi Division of the American Choral Directors Association)! Plans for our joint convention are moving along full steam ahead!  This is one MMEA/MSACDA Convention you will not want to miss!!!  Make your plans NOW to join us in Hattiesburg March 28-30, 2019! The headliner for our Convention this year is Voctave!

Please feel free to contact me if there is ANYTHING I can do to help you in your quest for musical excellence. If I can’t answer your questions, I promise you I will find someone who can!  Blessing to you for a great school year!

Yours for a song,
Nancy Robertson
MMEA President
