Myrtle holds off Stringer in Game 1 of Class 1A Softball Championship

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — May 15, 2025 — Myrtle built an early four-run lead and held off a late push from Stringer to claim a 4-3 victory Thursday in Game 1 of the MHSAA Class 1A softball championship series at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.

Myrtle (23-6) scored twice in each of the first two innings and never trailed, with eighth-grader Mary Ella Mayer delivering a pair of RBI doubles to lead the Lady Hawks. Starting pitcher Brooklyn Streich scattered nine hits over seven innings, allowing three earned runs while striking out one and walking three.

Cora Kelly and Ally Murphy also scored for Myrtle, which capitalized on a Stringer throwing error and a wild pitch in the second to extend its lead to 4-0.

Stringer (24-4-1) cut the deficit to 4-1 in the fourth on an RBI single by Natelee Prunera, then added single runs in the sixth and seventh to pull within one. Jaycee Holifield hit a solo home run in the final inning to bring the Lady Red Devils within a run, but Streich retired the final batter with the tying run on base.

Madilyn Graham went 3-for-4 for Stringer, and Prunera had two RBIs on two singles. Graham pitched six innings, striking out eight and walking two while allowing five hits and four runs (three earned).
