West Union earns 8-1 win in softball game delayed by termites

West Union beat Sebastopol 8-1 in Game 1 of the MHSAA Class 1A Softball State Championship series Tuesday at the USM Softball Complex in Hattiesburg.

West Union (28-4) had 12 hits and scored four runs in the fourth inning, one in the fifth and three in the seventh. Sebastopol (27-10) scored its only run in the seventh.

Elizabeth Hall led West Union, going 2-for-4 with a double and four RBIs. Ann Fleming Leflore was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs, an RBI and two stolen bases. Braley Martin went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and Addison Collum was 2-for-4 with a double. Mollie Reaves added a triple.

Ann Fleming Leflore earned the win, allowing one unearned run on two hits with one walk and four strikeouts in five innings. Collum started and allowed two hits with three walks and one strikeout in two scoreless innings.

Savannah Crout took the loss for Sebastopol, allowing eight runs, five earned, on 12 hits with two walks and five strikeouts in seven innings. Crout also drove in Sebastopol’s run. Marlee Smith went 2-for-3 with three stolen bases.

The game was suspended at 8:17 p.m. Tuesday because of a termite swarm after the fourth inning and resumed at 8:48 a.m. Wednesday after a 12-hour, 31-minute delay.
