George County won the Mississippi High School Activities Association’s first flag football championship, finishing a 16-team bracket that began with first-round games April 30 and concluded with the final three rounds May 9.
George County, the Region 8 No. 2 seed, opened the tournament against Biloxi, the Region 7 No. 1 seed. The Rebels advanced past Brandon in the second round and Laurel in the semifinals before winning the championship against St. Martin.
St. Martin advanced from the opposite side of the bracket to reach the championship matchup. The Region 7 No. 2 seed opened against Pascagoula, then moved through the bracket that included McComb, Hattiesburg and Warren Central.
The inaugural bracket included region winners and runners-up from across the state: Southaven, Vicksburg, Laurel, Lanier, Brandon, South Pike, Biloxi, George County, Warren Central, North Panola, Canton, Hattiesburg, McComb, Florence, Pascagoula and St. Martin.
