HATTIESBURG — Enterprise-Clarke took a 1-0 lead in the MHSAA Class 3A Softball Championship series Tuesday with a 1-0 extra-inning victory over Booneville at the University of Southern Mississippi.
The game remained scoreless through seven innings before Enterprise-Clarke capitalized on a pair of wild pitches in the top of the eighth to score the game’s only run.
With one out in the eighth, courtesy runner Lanie Addkison, placed on second base due to the international tiebreaker rule, advanced to third on a wild pitch and came home on another miscue during Hannah Winstead’s at-bat. The run was unearned.
Pitcher Macey Dearman delivered a dominant complete-game performance for Enterprise-Clarke (1-0), throwing eight shutout innings. She allowed just three hits, struck out 10, and walked four on 112 pitches.
Booneville (0-1) stranded eight runners, including two in scoring position in the bottom of the eighth. Dearman struck out Gracie Hodges to end the threat and secure the win.
Enterprise-Clarke managed only two hits in the game, a single by Maddy Brannan in the first and another by Madison Turner in the fifth. Brannan also stole a base and reached on an error in the fourth.
Booneville starter Olivia Garrett was nearly as sharp, striking out 20 without allowing an earned run. She gave up two hits and did not issue a walk over eight innings.
Game 2 of the best-of-three series is scheduled for Wednesday at USM.
