Six MHSAA state football championships will be decided Friday and Saturday when the Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi Gridiron Classic returns to Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium in Jackson for the first time in seven years.
The historic stadium in Mississippi’s capital city hosted the State Championships from 1992 through 2013. The stadium — with an official seating capacity of 44,215 and the long-time home of Jackson State University’s football program — opened in 1950.
“We are excited about the opportunity to return the Gridiron Classic to a venue with so much tradition,” MHSAA Executive Director Don Hinton said. “There have been so many great moments and memories for our schools and fans over the years at Memorial Stadium.
“This has been a challenging year for all of us due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Memorial Stadium’s larger capacity is ideal in that it allows fans to practice social distancing and other Covid safety protocols while still having a great view to watch the ballgames.”
The two-day event features three defending state champions in Oxford, West Point and Taylorsville as four as four state runner-ups from 2019 in Oak Grove, Poplarville, Noxubee County and Lumberton in the 40th annual showcase to crown the MHSAA’s best football teams.
