Gov. Tate Reeves announced a statewide shelter-in-place in order Wednesday that goes into effect April 3 at 5 PM and continues until April 20 at 8 AM.
The governor last month ordered all Mississippi public schools closed through April 17 due to the spread of the coronavirus. As a result, MHSAA athletics and activities, including competition and practice, have been suspended through April 17.
During his shelter-in-place announcement, Gov. Reeves said he would consider whether or not to extend statewide school closure during the next two weeks.
“The MHSAA office and MHSAA executive committee made up of school administrators continue to keep a close eye on this crisis and its impact on our member schools,” MHSAA executive director Don Hinton said. “We are talking regularly with our MHSAA Sports Medicine Advisory Committee which includes doctors and medical professionals.
“The suspension of athletics and activities will be in place as long as schools are closed per MHSAA rules.”
