Football safety guidelines for practice set

In an effort to increase the level of health and safety for student-athletes participating in the sport of football, the MHSAA executive committee approved the following guidelines to be effective beginning with the 2016 – 17 football season:

Fall Practice

Immersion tubs are required for the month of August.

Weeks 1 & 2:  For the first two weeks of fall practice, full-contact will be limited to 120 minutes of contact per week.  Only shorts and helmets are allowed for the first two days of practice.  Shorts, helmets, and shoulder pads are allowed on the third practice day.  On the sixth practice day all protective equipment may be worn.

Beginning Week 3 of fall practice, contact will be limited to 90 minutes per week, excluding games, and will continue until the last contest. In the event of an open week or no classic game being played 120 minutes of full contact will be allowed for that week.

  •        Spring Practice

First two practices will be in shorts/helmets.  Full-contact practice not to exceed a combined total of 120 minutes of full-speed contact per week.  One interscholastic scrimmage contest is allowed during the spring evaluation period and counts as one of the 15 allowable days.

(Effective August 1, 2016)
