CLEVELAND — The Tupelo boys and girls teams, St. Aloysius boys and St. Andrew’s girls took home championships from the MHSAA State Swim Meet before a packed house October 29 at Delta State University’s Aquatics Center.
Tupelo finished with 138 points to win Class II boys. Madison Central (100) and Oxford (62) rounded out the top three.
Tupelo earned 144 points in Class II girls. Oxford (73) and Madison Central (57) were next in line.
St. Aloysius totaled 125 points to win Class I boys. St. Stanislaus (91) and St. Joseph of Madison (75) rounded out the top three.
St. Andrew’s (119 points) edged host Cleveland (115) for the Class I girls championship. St. Joseph of Madison (91) finished third.
Tupelo set MHSAA overall State Meet records in the boys 400-yard freestyle relay at 3 minutes, 21.79 seconds and girls 200 medley relay (1:52.69). Tupelo’s Bailey Scott also established an overall State Meet record in the 50 free in 23.97 seconds.
It was the first two-classification meet since the MHSAA officially recognized swimming in the 1990s. Another format change included a switch to preliminary races in the morning with championships in the evening, a move that led to more than 500 swimmers who met the qualifying standards.
The finals were streamed live on the MHSAA Network and are archived free of charge at misshsaa.tv.
