Please remember that this is not just a football issue. Any young athlete participating in the heat is vulnerable to heat illness, including participants in activities such as marching band, cheer, and even volleyball players practicing in a hot gym.

It is crucial that the heat acclimatizing guidelines are strictly followed as published, with extra vigilance during the first 3-4 days of the two week acclimatization period. This is the time when our young athletes are most vulnerable to the heat. Please help protect these students from a potentially deadly and preventable condition.

Football Practice Guidelines:

During the first five days of the heat-acclimatization process, athletes may not participate in more than one practice per day. An additional one-hour maximum walk-through is permitted during the first five days of the heat-acclimatization period; however, a three-hour recovery period should be inserted between the practice and walk-through (or vice versa).

If a practice is interrupted by inclement weather or heat restrictions, the practice should recommence once conditions are deemed safe, but total practice time should not exceed three hours per day.

During the first two days of the heat-acclimatization period, a helmet will be the only protective equipment permitted. During days three, four and five, only helmets and shoulder pads will be worn. Beginning on day six, all protective equipment may be worn and full contact may begin.

Beginning no earlier than the sixth day and continuing through the 14th day, double-practice days (two-a-days) must be followed by a single-practice day. On single-practice days, one walk-through is permitted, but it must be separated from the practice by at least three hours of continuous rest. When a double-practice day is followed by a rest day, another double-practice day is permitted after the rest day.

Fall Practice for Sport of Football

Immersion tubs are required for the month of August.

Weeks 1 & 2: For the first two weeks of fall practice, full-contact will be limited to 120 minutes of contact per week. Only shorts and helmets are allowed for the first two days of practice. Shorts, helmets, and shoulder pads are allowed on the third practice day. On the sixth practice day all protective equipment may be worn.

Beginning Week 3 of fall practice, contact will be limited to 90 minutes per week, excluding games, and will continue until the last contest. In the event of an open week or no classic game being played 120 minutes of full contact will be allowed for that week.
Please contact the MHSAA office if you have any questions concerning the beginning of the fall sports season.
